Phulkari Women of Amritsar completes 2 years – A job well done


The Gala Night hosted by Phulkari – Women of Amritsar was just as gala a success!! With the CHANGE of GUARD ceremony, Founder President Ms. Praneet Bubber and the managing and executive committees were awarded with The Phulkari Book that showcased the two years of Phulkari where it grew from the FIRST EVER women’s organisation to a 250 member organisation that has brought forward a radical change for the woman community of Amritsar. Councillor Sandhya Sikka took over as the incoming president and presented her passionate vision for the future. Phulkari thanks the District Commissioner of Amritsar, Mr. S.S. Dhillon for gracing the occasion and the city of Amritsar, especially the family members of all Phulkari members for joining us. Phulkari also salutes her awardees, the WOMEN of HONOUR, Ms. Shibani Kashyap, Ms. Maheka Mirpuri, and Ms. Reshma Qureshi for their indomitable spirit.

The Awards & Change of GuardGala of Phulkari, Women of Amritsar, held at the Taj Swarna this Sunday evening was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner MrShivdular Singh Dhillon. At the culmination of the initial two-year settling in period, the Founder President Praneet Bubber and the FoundingExecutive handed over charge to the new President Sandhya Sikka and her new Executive.

On this occasion, the Phulkari organisation gave away special Honour awards to three women who have accomplished success in their chosen fields and are giving back to society in meaningful ways. Maheka Mirpuri is a fashion designer who hosts an annual charity fundraiser for the Tata Memorial Hospital and has set up the foundation MCan to work with the less privileged cancer patients. Reshma Qureshi is an acid attack survivor and ambassador of the #EndAcidSale campaign that won major accolades at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Shibani Kashyap is a singer active in the Hindi film industry. Their inspirational stories would spur the ladies of our holy city to set worthy goals for themselves and find the grit to achieve them, uplifting society as a whole.

Another highlight of the event was the launch of the Phulkari book – a telling of its inception, vision, origin and journey so far. Phulkari has enriched the lives of its members as well as the general citizenry of the city of Amritsar through its initiatives in a variety of fields including anti-cervical cancer projects in partnership with CAPED, collaboration with the literary organisation Majha House, support for the Book Fairy, a reading program at the Shri Vinayak NishulkPathshala for under-privileged children, book discussions, wellness sessions, panel discussions, retreats and bazaars.

Stand-up comedian Manpreet Singh was Master of Ceremonies for the musical nite wherein the entertainment was provided by three of the city’s own home-grown musical acts: singers Saloni and Sahil Arora; Shreya Khanna; and four-member band 6 Nerves.
