This Spanish television heist crime drama series has gained a worldwide popularity thanks to Netflix. Created by Álex Pina, initial intentions limited the series to be told in two parts. Netflix re-cut the series into 22 shorter episodes and released them worldwide, beginning with the first part on 20 December 2017, followed by the second part on 6 April 2018. However Netflix then renewed the series with an increased budget for 16 new episodes total. Season three aired on 19th july 2019.The success of season three saw the show become the most watched non-English language series in its first week on the platform.
Money Heist focuses on a gang of daring robbers, led by a heist mastermind called the Professor (Álvaro Morte). Money Heist‘s first two parts saw the gang lead history’s largest money heist on the Royal Mint of Spain. In third season we see the gang reunite to plan a rescue robbery for their youngest Rio.
The story of the third season starts with Rio and tokyo committing a mistake by using satellite phones. Well for two most wanted criminals in the eyes of law using the phones was the biggest blunder they could have done. The police and the intelligence agency tracks both of the down, Tokyo escapes but Rio end up being arrested. Subsequently the gang members start working on robbing the national reserve from the Bank of Spain.
In the start of season four the police have just faked Lisbon’s execution whereas Nairobi is struggling between life and death. The events have taken a pretty ugly turn for the team and thus the professor declares war. For the first time we see the mastermind dealing with emotional turmoil, backed into a corner and desperate to improvise, particularly something that his scheming brain hasn’t done in years.
The story has beautifully exhibited the part where the commoners support the Gang. How the Dali mask has become a symbol and how people consider themselves one of the Dali’s. The plot is enriched with twists and turns which keep you engrossed. The state police Inspector Alicia Sierra is the biggest hurdle in the gang’s whole plan. The season ends with the professor on Alicia’s gunpoint.
Concept of Money Heist
The series was as slickly executed as the heist. It had everything a heist needs; wild ingenuity, loveable rogues and a clear sense of physical geography. Except for The Professor, the gang were inside, surrounded by the cops. It was a post-crash thriller, with a Robin Hood moral angle.
The early episodes were characterised by a rush of twists and new ideas. The way the falling apart strategy comes back together is marvellously executed. Now they are being further dragged out to fill airtime. Plot dynamics are being reheated and repeated, with diminishing returns. All the joy in the heist format is wondering especially how the robbers will escape. The season has definately left us clutched and waiting for season 5 though!!
