Dear singers ,( I was your ardent fan )
The glitzy glamour of the Grammy awards struck a New musical note In the world of music : music with rhythm and meaning . Punjabi music too has meaning .
think again .
Does it ?
Imagine your favourite punjabi singer bringing home a Grammy ! Hard to imagine ? I believe so .A musical composition is not just a beat , it is a rhythm that conveys a meaning – a “ meaningful meaning“!
Now ask yourself once more : what did you learn from the latest punjabi song in your playlist ?
Here’s what my younger brother learnt ( much to my horror ) :
BANDOOKWALA IS COOL 🙁 the owner of a gun is cool ):
Guns are cool . Your status is defined by the number of guns you own . Firing in the air during marriages ( Hawaii fire ) is normal . Glorified singers are shown sprawled on thrones , surrounded by men and guns . In , short ,owning guns is normal . My brother was simply not aware of a “ gun license “ , thanks to Punjabi music . The gun obsession has permeated our society so vociferously that even some beats / tunes are modified versions of the sounds Of booming guns ! Owning a gun is not akin to owning candy . It has criminal Overtones that have been wrongly glorified ; Curtsy – punjabi songs . Please , stop glorifying weapons , else a Third World War ( spearheaded by punjabi youngsters ) will not be very far off .
A BIG SUV SOLVES PROBLEMS THAT ARE EVEN BIGGER THAN ITS OWN SIZE !
Swanky cars show how powerful you are . Therefore Cars determine your rank in society . After all , the gedi route Is a luxury – car – route . Therefore , it is simply necessary to own a luxury car . ( I was flabbergasted ) . Almost every punjabi song has three protagonists – a boy , a girl and a swanky luxury car . “No car – no girl “( to put it blankly ) , such is the mindset of our young ones . The fact that girls are mainly gold diggers , is quite another matter that is vastly propagated by such songs . The “big -car—means- big respect “myth needs to be debunked immediately . Dear singers , please start the process .
GIRLS ARE “OBTAINABLE “IF YOU BY THEM A LEHENGA / BANGLE / ANKLET :
Yes ,he actually said that . My little brother told me that , very emphatically. It was patriarchy in it’s most dangerous form , Articulated by a mere 15 year old . Music videos feature girls who are completely dependent on their male counterparts to provide them with accessories( bangles , necklace etc ) . Their sole purpose is the acquisition of a lehenga —- nothing beyond it . The stereotypical categorisation of the punjabi female has been completed By recent musical compositions.Lastly Thank you singers , for that , although ,I beg to differ , not all girls covet a lehenga , please note that , dear singers ! Dear singers ,I was your ardent fan.
BECAUSE WHAT YOU SING MATTERS.
Warm regards ,
( a former fan )
