A recent incident that has grabbed social media’s attention is Boys Locker Room. Presently it’s about a few boys from a good school and an exceptional background glorifying something as heinous as rape.
Screenshots from a group, called ‘Bois Locker Room’, had been shared widely on Twitter and Instagram on Sunday. The real world is not a safe place, agreed. But wasn’t the virtual world or social media supposed to be a safe platform. People haven’t left that out. Earlier, thought of late night strolls, moving out alone used to scare girls but why make life easy. They should think before uploading a picture to their accounts too. Because that very picture might just end up getting you raped.
Instagram and twitter are flooded with such good for people who creep into someone’s private life and create nuisance for no reason. This is exactly the case that happened here. A group of teenage boys including minors created a group chat. That group chat was nothing like a school group and has been deactivated now due to the huge outrage. Casualising rape, sexual objectification, slut shaming and what not. This is what the students of class 11 and 12 were proudly participating in. Not just that they stooped to a lower level by blackmailing the girls and giving them rape threats.
This is what our society has done as a routine. Being exceptionally good at blaming the victim and circumstances. Because it actually takes courage to call out the accused , society sticks to dastardliness. That is not all , since domestic violence and marital rape are casualised, how can we expect the kids growing up in such an atmosphere to act like a gentleman. Planning to gang rape a minor is what these kids took pride in. And the justification we all heard very well was “rape hua to nhi”.
A case has been registered under section 465 (forgery), 471 (using forged document), 469 (Forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 509 (intending to insult the modesty of any woman) of the IPC and 67 and 67A of the Information Technology (IT) Act at cyber cell of Delhi police. On Monday, the police received a complaint from the principal of a prominent school in South Delhi’s Saket at the Saket police station requesting for a probe into the matter, the same was forwarded to the Cyber Cell thereof. Most of the group members have been identified by the delhi police and they have assured a strict action to be taken against all of them.
Well if we talk of the nation as a whole, this was just one group. Presently there might be thousands of such other groups defaming and harassing women. Lastly, may be little little life lessons could help. Good parenting does wonders, there are parents out there who raise gentlemen and also the ones’ whose kids turn out to be potential rapists. Is this what it has come to?
We consider ourselves superior to Pakistan in all cricket face offs. But here is the fact ,India tops the chart of being the most unsafe country for women when Pakistan ranks sixth. That should get you thinking!
