Guru Nanak Dev ji’s 550th birth Anniversary celebrated earlier this month was made a very grand affair with the opening of Kartarpur corridor. The corridor is a visa free border crossing secure area connecting Gurudwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan to Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur, India. This particular crossing allows Indian devotees to visit the Gurdwara located 4.7 KM from Indo Pak border without a visa.
The corridor was earlier proposed in the year 1999 by the former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Nawaz Sharif. But last year in november the foundation stone for the corridor was laid in both the countries. The construction of the corridor has been possible due to mutual understanding of governments of both the countries. Mr Navjot Singh as they say is the real hero of the seen. The corridor could’nt have been a reality without him. The way this historical affair has come together has left us all stunned. The credit undoubtedly goes to Mr. Imran Khan and Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu.
Ahead of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, Imran Khan inaugurated the Kartarpur corridor in the Punjab province. The corridor is visa free for Indians but the pakistani residents can not visit Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak without procuring the Indian visa.
Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh led the first delegation of Sikh pilgrims as they entered Pakistan through the Kartarpur corridor. Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was also part of the jatha while Mr. Navjot Singh Sidhu was the chief guest at the opening ceremony in Pakistan.
Former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh told ANI “It was a good beginning, India-Pakistan relations are subject to many buts and ifs, I hope this is a good beginning to normalise our relation.”
